In a significant step towards women empowerment, Tripura is considering hiring female drivers for government services. The state government's initiative aims to provide more opportunities for women and break gender stereotypes in traditionally male-dominated professions.
On Tuesday, Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu honored the first batch of women drivers who successfully completed their training at the Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR). The governor congratulated the new drivers and encouraged them to be confident and face challenges with the knowledge and skills they gained from the institute.
Transport Minister Sushanta Chowudhury highlighted the government's commitment to women's empowerment. He emphasized that the 33% reservation for women in government jobs, including driver positions, would benefit these newly trained women drivers. The minister also praised the IDTR, which was established in April 2023 with an investment of Rs 14 crore, for its role in empowering women.
The minister further informed that some of the trained women drivers had already secured jobs through campus recruitment drives conducted by travel agencies. This early success story demonstrates the potential for women to excel in the field of driving and contribute to the state's development.
