Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha emphasized on Tuesday that the advancement of the Indo-Bangla connectivity projects is closely tied to the evolving bilateral relationship between India and Bangladesh.
In response to media queries about key projects like the Maitri Setu bridge over the Feni River and the Agartala-Akhaura railway line, both awaiting formal inauguration, Dr. Saha said, "The future of these projects will depend on the direction of bilateral relations, with discussions ongoing at various levels."
Highlighting the recent challenges faced by Bangladesh, Dr. Saha noted, "The political shifts in Bangladesh have impacted its economy significantly. Although there are no overt tensions between our nations, some underlying issues remain. For Bangladesh's economic growth, a strong relationship with India is indispensable. Once these issues are resolved, the projects will facilitate cross-border trade."
Addressing concerns over increased infiltration from Bangladesh, the Chief Minister said he has raised the matter with the central government. "Some border areas remain porous, enabling illegal crossings. I have requested the Home Ministry to install new barbed wire fencing along these stretches to prevent breaches."
Dr. Saha further elaborated on security efforts, detailing a three-layer border security system involving the Border Security Force (BSF) as the first line of defense, supported by Tripura State Rifles and Tripura Police. "Measures at all levels aim to combat infiltration effectively," he stated.
As of October 28, 2024, the BSF in Tripura has apprehended 556 Bangladeshi nationals and 50 Rohingya migrants this year, with arrests increasing notably over the last three months, totaling 281 since August 2024. Additionally, nine individuals involved in supporting these crossings were also detained. By comparison, in 2023, the BSF detained 337 Bangladeshi nationals and 112 Rohingya migrants.
