Today, on the auspicious occasion of Sharad Purnima, Eastern India revels in the joy of Kojagari Laxmi Pooja. This sacred festival honors Goddess Lakshmi, the embodiment of wealth and prosperity, and Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe.

• A Legacy of Resilience

Kojagari Laxmi Pooja holds a special significance for Bengalis, particularly those who migrated from East Bengal (now Bangladesh) after the 1947 partition. This festival serves as a testament to their unwavering faith and cultural heritage.

• The Mythology Behind Kojagari

Legend has it that Goddess Lakshmi roams the earth on Sharad Purnima, blessing her devotees with health and wealth. The term "Kojagari" originates from the Bengali phrase "Ke Jago Re," meaning "who is awake," symbolizing the devotees' eagerness to welcome the goddess.

• Rituals and Traditions

Devotees observe a day-long fast, offer prayers to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu, and adorn their homes with intricate alpana patterns. The puja commodities include incense, lamps, and kheer, while feeding brahmans and providing offerings to pandits.

• A Celebration Beyond Boundaries

Kojagari Laxmi Pooja transcends cultural and geographical divides, uniting people in their quest for prosperity and happiness. As the full moon shines bright, let us embrace the spirit of this festival and cultivate love, compassion, and understanding.

Moonlit Musings

The moon, a symbol of romance and tranquility, illuminates our lives on this special night. As we gaze at its radiant beauty, let us remember the wise words: "With freedom, books, flowers, and the moon, who could not be happy?"

• Laxmi Pooja in Tripura and Bengal-A Celebration Beyond Boundaries

Laxmi Pooja, the festival dedicated to Goddess Laxmi, is celebrated with immense fervor in Tripura and Bengal, transcending social and economic barriers. This auspicious occasion is marked not only by the affluent but also by the poorest of the poor, illustrating the inclusive spirit of the celebration.

Traditionally, the vehicle or 'Bahana' of Maa Laxmi is depicted as an owl. However, it is fascinating to learn from Shri Akhilesh Pal that, historically, the Bahana of Laxmi could also be swans, peacocks, and even deer. This diversity in symbolism reflects the rich cultural tapestry and the various interpretations of mythological elements in different regions.

During our boyhood and even into adulthood, Laxmi Pooja was not limited to the Hindu community but was celebrated by Muslims as well. This cross-cultural participation highlights the festival's universal appeal and the harmonious coexistence of different communities in the region.

Unfortunately, in recent years, there has been a shift in this inclusive atmosphere. Political changes, particularly following Sheikh Hasina's exit from Bangladesh, have contributed to a growing divide. The once unifying celebration has seen a sharp decline in participation from the Muslim community, pointing to broader societal and political shifts that have impacted communal harmony.

Despite the challenges and recent shifts, the essence of Laxmi Pooja as a festival of prosperity and well-being remains steadfast. The hope for the future is a powerful one. It is the hope that, with time, the festival will once again become a symbol of unity and inclusivity, fostering goodwill and camaraderie among all communities. This hope inspires us to work towards a future of communal harmony.

• A Personal Reflection

My father's words still resonate within me: "Akanka Goura Chandra Dila Darshan, Skalannka Chandre Ar Kiba Proyojan., Ete Bali Chandre Rahu Karila Grahan ( it was said by Ragunath Pandit, the compatriot of Chaitanya Deb) “(Who needs the stained moon when stainless Gouranga Mahaprabhu has surfaced? And there was a lunar eclipse, for his divine presence eclipsed the night sky; shining with purity, his light transcended the cosmos.

May the brightness of Sharad Purnima guide us toward eternal joy and happiness!!
