The all-pervasive virus of corruption seems to have entrenched itself deeply in entire structure of Tripura police except perhaps the top echelons of the president’s colour winner force. While charges of corruption, specially bribe taking against civil police and the traffic wing are as old as policing itself, a shameful incident that happened today proves how deep the rot runs in the traffic wing of state police.
According to reports received from Madhupur area under Bishalgarh police station, a youth named Rahul Sarkar of Chhabbish card village under Madhupur police station had left by his own Maruti vehicle for Agartala with two of his friends this morning with Rs 4 lakhs in cash to purchase another vehicle . As soon as they reached the Hospital Chaumuhuni area in Madhupur, two traffic inspectors from Bishalgarh police unit, Sanjit Debbarma and Amarjit Debbarma and a constable Prasenjit Debnath stopped Rahul Sarkar’s vehicle. The trio searched the vehicle and the three passengers in the name of tracing narcotics or ‘Ganja’ and found Rs 4 lakhs in cash in a bag being carried by Rahul.
Desperate to grab at least a part of the cash the two traffic inspectors and the constable started threatening and intimidating Rahul and his two friends , saying they would be arrested under NDPS act on charge of carrying illegal cash received from transaction in narcotics. Refusing to listen to the pleas made by Rahul and his two friends as to where they were going and why, the two traffic inspectors Sanjit Debbarma and Amarjit Debbarma and the constable Prasenjit Debnath snatched away Rs 2 lakhs from Rahul Sarkar’s bag and moved away . Having no other scope for obtaining respite or relief Rahul Sarkar and his two friends filed a complaint with the Madhupur police station charging the two traffic inspectors and the constable with fraudulent snatching of their money. However , there is no information as yet about any action being initiated by Madhupur police in the case.
