A day after floating her own political outfit—Tripura People’s Socialist Party—The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has expelled Patal Kanya Jamatia from the party today. Jamatia was the vice president of BJP’s state unit. A press statement issued by the BJP in this regard said that Jamatia had been expelled from the party’s position because of anti-party activities. The party statement categorically stated that she would no longer be the primary member of the party as well. The order comes into effect immediately in accordance with a party notification issued by General Secretary Amit Rakshit as per the direction of Party President Rajib Bhattacharjee, the statement added. Earlier, BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee informed this newspaper that her announcement of having allegiance to another political party despite serving as the BJP vice president was surprising. “In BJP, we don’t have any tradition of taking any unilateral decision. Such decisions are taken after discussions in appropriate forums. We will discuss the matter and take action accordingly,” he told this newspaper. Her expulsion from the BJP likely paved the way for her removal from the post Tripura Rehabilitation Corporation Limited (TRPCL). She was made chairperson of the TRPCL and also accorded Minister of State status after facing a defeat in the 2023 polls from her home constituency Ampinagar in Gomati District.
