The Tripura government has launched a long term plan to create 3,200 model entrepreneurs across all eight districts, Kiran Gitte, Secretary of the Industries and Commerce Department has said. Speaking at a workshop on the Government of India's RAMP (Raising and Accelerating MSME Programme) in Agartala, Gitte emphasised the need to boost the state’s manufacturing sector. Currently, the sector contributes only 11% to Tripura's GDP, compared to the national average of 28%, a gap of 17% that the government aims to close.
Tripura has around 200,000 active MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises), but only 40,000 are registered. The government plans a three-tier action plan: registering all MSMEs, improving market linkages and credit support for 32,000 year-round operating MSMEs, and transforming 10% of these into model units, granting their owners the title of "model entrepreneurs."
District committees led by District Magistrates will be set up to facilitate the MSMEs, with a focus on market and credit linkages as well as value addition. Minister Santana Chakma highlighted the critical role of MSMEs in achieving self-reliance, stating that 98% of Tripura's units are micro-level. She expressed optimism that the government’s efforts, along with technological and financial support, would enable local entrepreneurs to thrive.Tripura aims to create 3,200 model entrepreneurs.
