The law and order situation in the state, specially in and around the state capital seem to have reached its nadir in the absence of seniormost police officials on leave. In two incidents in Aralia area south of Agartala last night an organised gang looted cash and valuables from two houses. No one in the dacoit gang has so far been arrested by police.
Police sources said that around 12-00 last night a gang of dacoits stormed the house of a mason Arjun Das in the ‘Shramajeevi Colony’ in Aralia and looted Rs 3 thousand in cash and some valuables including gold ornaments. At that time Arjun Das and his wife were not at home but when the dacoits realized that Arjun was returning home, they fled with the looted materials. Arjun Das later said that he had kept the money to pay his installment to the ‘Bandhan Bank’. Shortly afterwards the police arrived and assured Arjun and his wife that they would nab the dacoits and recover the looted goods, before returning.
But within a short time another three-member gang stormed the house of one Uma Das on the other side of the ‘Shramajeevi Colony’ and this time unidentified gang came in police uniform. At that time Uma Das’s husband had gone out to respond to nature’s call and the dacoits tied him with a rope and forced him to keep silent by brandishing daggers and other sharp-cutting weapons. The dacoits forced Uma Das to hand over to them Rs 7 thousand in cash due to a bank but did not find any ornament or other portable valuables like gold. Uma Das later told police that the dacoits had left her home after seizing the cash as they realized that no gold or other valuables would be available. The police personnel registered a case but as yet there has been no arrest.
