Bangladesh student leader accepts legitimacy of minority demands, to raise them to the new government

Alongside disturbances and disruption the violent change of regime in Bangladesh also appears to have brought in a fresh air of positivity to the turbulence in politics. A progressive minded student leader of the movement that brought about the fall of the Awami League government,Sarjish Alam today accepted the facts of violence perpetrated on minorities there and legitimacy of the eight point demand placed by them to the new interim government. “It is fact that some undesirable elements tried to take advantage of confusion in the present transitional period and committed crimes but at the same time a section of our student community and citizenry made efforts to protect homes and religious places of minorities ; we have spoken to the ‘Sanatani’ and other minority sections of people and I am convinced that the eight point charter of demands they have raised is legitimate” said Sarjish Alam , adding that they will bring this to the notice of interim government.

He added that the student community is trying to reconstruct and reform Bangladesh as a truly democratic and progressive country where every one will have equal rights. Sarjish deplored the misleading propaganda being carried out by a number of TV channels in neighbouring India , describing this as a ‘result of ignorance’. He said that such propaganda divorced from fact and reality do more harm than good.

Sarjish also appealed to expatriate Bangladeshis to send their remittances to the country through legal and transparent route so that the government is not deprived of its due revenue needed for development of the country. He expressed concern that Bangladesh is deep in debt to foreign countries and international financial institutions . “Our current debt is more than 15.5 lakh crores and unless the economy is put back on rail soon the country will ultimately suffer; hence we should all work honestly and hard for the development and greater good of the country” said Sarjish.
