New BD interim government chief Dr Yunus visits Dhakeshwari temple , assures minorities of safety

In a positive gesture the chief of the new interim government in Bangladesh,nobel-laureate Dr M. Yunus today paid a visit to the Dhakeshwari temple in Dhaka , capital of the country. During past stormy week the minorities in Bangladesh, mostly Hindus, had been subjected to organised terror attacks including looting and arsoning of residences and religious places by anti-social elements who took advantage of the power vacuum in the wake of the exit from power of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. This had created a furore and storm of protest both within Bangladesh by minorities as well as without it, specially in India.

In order to dispel the confusion and fear in the minds of the minorities Dr Yunus visited the Dhakeshwari temple and was warmly welcomed by the leading figures of the minority community today. Scared and concerned over their future and selective attacks on them , a co-ordination committee of the minority organizations had submitted a memorandum to Dr Yunus seeking appointment for a deputation and raising eight point charter of demands.

Dr Yunus himself took the initiative to reassure the minorities of their security and safety and during discussion with minority leaders said that Bangladesh and its people are united entities and all citizens of the country are entitled to equal rights . He assured them of addressing their fear and concern and said that drastic administrative action will be taken against those indulging in criminal activities. “We are in a period of transition and our democratic institutions have to be restored to normal functioning ; this will be done at the earliest and this government as well as all subsequent governments will function within the constitutional framework and rights of all citizens cutting across all affiliations will be protected” said Dr Yunus . The minority leaders who held discussion with the new interim government chief also expressed their satisfaction over the discussion with Dr Yunus and assurances given by him.
