The next meeting of Norht Eastern Council (NEC) is scheduled to come off at Agartala on August 29. This meeting to discuss the socio-economic, developmental and infrastructural problems of northeastern region is expected to continue for at least two days. Disclosing this official sources said that the chief ministers, governors and police DGPs of all northeastern states are likely to attend the meeting though there has been no formal announcement in this regard from the administration so far.

Earlier on May 13 in the year 2008 the 56th meeting of NEC was held in Agartala’s Prajna Bhawan. As is well known the NEC had been formed in 1972 following the second reorganization of Northeast by prime minister India Gandhi as part of which Meghalaya, Tripura and Manipur had emerged as full-fledged states while Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram had become union territories but in 1987 both had been upgraded to full-fledged statehood. The remaining members of NEC are Assam, Nagaland and Sikkim, the latter being included since the year 2002.

Sources said that Tripura chief minister Dr Manik Saha attended the 70th meeting of the NEC in Guwahati on 8-9 October last year. That meeting presided over by union home minister Amit Shah had seen the Tripura chief minister plead for heightened funding of infrastructural problems of northeast by NEC. This time also the chief minister Dr Manik Saha is expected to bat for higher funding for NEC so that the regional body can disburse adequate amounts of funds for development works among states of northeast.
