In a strange development in the state’s legal history reputed advocate Samrat Kar Bhowmik who earned lot of kudos for successfully arguing and steering to conclusion many cases on behalf of the state government as special Public Prosecutor (PP) has officially dissociated himself from all government cases . Samrat Kar Bhowmik had hit the limelight way back in the year 2016 when he had successfully ensured the prosecution of 10/12 CPI (M) killers of slain Congress MLA Parimal Saha on April 7 1983. The case had been hanging fire for more than three decades due to lack of care on the part of the government’s prosecution side and it was only after the then chief justice Deepak Kumar Gupta had ordered reopening of all the cases that the long-pending case was restarted . It was Samrat Kar Bhowmik’s legal acumen , investigative skill and impeccable presentation that led to sentencing to life imprisonment of all the killers of Parimal Saha.

Since then Samrat Kar Bhowmik has never looked up and earned considerable reputation as a consummate lawyer , representing the government as special PP. But in the latest sensational case of the murder of the ‘Bharat Ratna Club’ secretary Durga Prasanna Deb alias Vicky on April 30 that Samrat Kar Bhowmik had been noticed by the police under section-91 of CrPc for search of his house. Apparently the police had extracted a confession from one of the nabbed accused Sunny Saha that the hard disk of the CC camera removed from the house of one of the accused Raju Barman had been kept in the residence of advocate Samrat Kar Bhowmik. Fearing further trouble Samrat Kar Bhowmik applied for anticipatory bail in the session court and the matter will come up and be decided on May 17.

In the mean time out of frustration Samrat Kar Bhowmik has formally dissociated himself from all the cases in which he had been representing the government as special Public Prosecutor . This has created complications in the handling of a number of cases of the government but Samrat is unlikely to retract his decision.
