In an incident which confirms the longstanding charge of ruling party leaders backing behind the rampant cattle lifting and smuggling, the police in Dharma Nagar yesterday arrested Sundar Ali, the chief of Phulbarikandi panchayat in Kailasahar. He has been sent to police remand for three days today. Sources from Dharma Nagar said that with the help of an influential leader of BJP in Kailasahar , Sundar Ali had been running a lucrative racket of cattle lifting and smuggling across the border by paying the leader and local police personnel handsomely on each consignment. The cattle smuggling racket has spread over Dharma Nagar , Kailasahar and Sonamura subdivisions but it is only in Dharma Nagar that the police have been active in Dharma Nagar under the leadership of SDP (north) Bhanupada Chakraborty. Yesterday Sundar Ali was arrested from Dharma Nagar town itself by Sub-inspector Shubhadip Das, in charge of stopping cattle smuggling and lifting.

Earlier another notorious cattle smuggler Liton Das alias Nantu had been arrested by Dharma Nagar police from Noabari area under Panisagar subdivision . He along with Sundar Ali was involved in the lifting of nine buffaloes being smuggled on a pick-up van on March 24 but the van was seized . Liton alias Nantu Das was arrested on March 26 and it after interrogating him that police got feedback about the close and active involvement of Sundar Ali in the cattle smuggling racket. Sources from Dharma Nagar said that the way Sundar Ali had been arrested it would be difficult to have him released by ruling party leaders of Dharma Nagar and Kailasahar.
