It was a day dedicated to recognition : Tripura’s famous chemical scientist Dr Arijit Das finally secured government recognition of the 20 innovative methods and 35 formulae in chemistry invented by him by handing over to chief minister Dr Manik Saha his four copyright registration certificates containing the recognition he has obtained for his innovative work. Dr Arijt Das has invented altogether 26 new methods and 40 formulae for chemistry students at the under-graduate and post-graduate level and the remaining ones are in the process of being given copyright by government of India. Ironically, none of the methodology or formulae devised by Dr Arijit Das has as yet been included in the academic syllabus in India even though many foreign universities including university of California, Weeki Educator (New Zealand) and Stephenson Library, England , UK and celebrated American Chemical Society (ACS) and National Library (Calcutta) have already included his inventions.

This came to light today officially in the freshers welcome ceremony of the Bir Bikram Memorial College (BBMC) which came off in the Hall No-1 of Rabindra Shata Varshiki Bhawan, Agartala. The programme was presided by the outgoing principal of the college Dr Ratan Deb and convened by Dr Sayan Chowdhury. While the chief minister Dr Manik Saha was the chief guest, minister for tourism and food and civil supply Sushanta Chowdhury acted as guest of honour. The BJP state president Rajiv Bhattacharjee was also a special invitee in his capacity as former chairman of Khadi Board of India.

After the ritual lighting of lamp by the chief minister, professor Jibon Krishna Patra who is the Teachers Council secretary addressed the inaugural session and called upon the students to be serious about their studies . Highlighting the achievements of the college, professor Patra referred to the new laboratory established in the college with central government’s funding at the instance of Dr Arijit Das and said that students and research scholars from many other colleges come here to study and research. The minister Sushanta Chowdhury inspired the students with high aims and advised them to be careful about their studies more than anything else. The director of higher education N.C.Sharma also addressed the students and asked them to concentrate on studies in stead of engaging in extra-curricular activities . He also encouraged Dr Arijit Das to hand over his copyright registration certificates to the chief minister. The principal Dr Ratan Deb also addressed the gathering of students and advised them to inculcate a sense of discipline, punctuality and dedication to studies in their college life to shine in future.

Speaking last the chief minister Dr Manik Saha appreciated the performance and achievements of the BBMC and said that the college should keep up their good work. He also asked the students to study and research in India in stead of going abroad. “You must remember that Dr APJ Abdul Kalam studied and researched in India and became one of the greatest space scientists in the world ; you must follow his example ; be patriotic and dedicate your life, studies and research to the cause of the nation” said Dr Saha , the chief minister. After the principal Dr Ratan Deb’s speech the vote of thanks was offered by convener of the programme Dr Sayan Chowdhury.
