Normal activities have been resumed in the century-old Mahabir Tea Estate in the Kamalpur sub-division of Dhalai District after a gap of several months and ending the five-year-long uncertainty looming large on the fate of the workers. The new owners of the garden have taken over the management from May 23.

The garden established in 1927 landed into trouble about five years ago due to a dispute among the shareholders. Huge loan burdens also become a big hindrance in running the garden and the owners stopped coming. At this juncture, the workers themselves formed a cooperative and ran the garden by selling green leaves.

The arrangement came to a standstill following a murder in the area and the arrest of the president of the Workers' cooperative. The workers also were not getting their wages as the management system become ineffective.

However, recently the bank auctioned the garden as the owners were not paying the loan money and a new owner came.
