The forty six newly elected MLAs belonging to BJP, IPFT, CPI (M) and Congress were sworn in today as members of the house by the Protem speaker Benoy Bhusan Das in a simple ceremony in the conference hall of the state assembly building. For the BJP all the thirty one MLAs excluding Pratima Bhowmik and the single IPFT MLA Shukla Charan Noatia took oath as members of the house. However, the swearing in of the 11 CPI (M) MLAs got delayed as two of them had come late and the organizers of the ceremony did not wait to complete the process . As a result the CPI (M) MLAs headed by Jiten Chowdhury took oath as members of the house in the chamber of the Protem speaker Benoy Bhusan Das.

Speaking on the issue Jiten said that two of their colleagues had come late and that is why they had to take oath in the Protem speaker’s chamber. “We have been elected to work for people and we will play the assigned role of the opposition in a constructive manner , pointing out the errors and failures of the government; we hope that the newly elected government will keep its promises as on the last occasion they broke their commitments given in so-called vision document; in case they fail to keep promises we will raise the issue in the assembly” said Jiten.

Interestingly , only two of the three elected Congress MLAs, Birajit Sinha and Gopal Roy took oath today as members of the house but Sudip Roybarman skipped the proceedings. Asked about this, Birajit Sinha said that he did not know why Sudip had not taken oath today but added that he may take oath tomorrow along with 13 ‘Tipra Motha’ MLAs who will be sworn in tomorrow.
