Drao Kumar Reang, a former minister and father of TIPRA Motha candidate in Kanchanpur dies

Drao Kumar Reang, one of the warriors of alternative tribal politics in the state in the late sixties and father of Tipra Motha Candidate from Kanchanpur Filip Kumar Reang died in his residence at Kambal Tilla in Kanchanpur on Saturday evening. He was 84 and was suffering from old age diseases for a long time.

The first among the Reang community youths to be graduated, Drao Kumar joined briefly in a government job but shortly after quit it to become a full-time politician. He was one of the founders of the Tripura Upajati Juba Samity and served the party in various capacities including its President.

He entered the state assembly for the first time in 1977 from Santir Bazar, then a general seat and one of the four TUJS MLAs. The election is considered a milestone in Tripura’s legislative history for various reasons. This election ensured the establishment of the first Left Front Government in the state which own 56 seats and the Congress got washed away. It was the first time a regional political party TUJS entered the assembly.
