The focal point of pre-nomination politics in the non-left parties seems to have shifted to Delhi with the PCC president Birajit Sinha having departed by flight for the capital to hold discussion with the AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge over seat sharing arrangement with CPI (M) and the Congress’s nomination profile. Brajit will be meeting AICC president Kharge and in-charge general secretary Ajay Kumar and others to sort out urgent pending issues. His visit to Delhi has been necessitated by the reluctance of the CPI (M) to cede more than twelve seats to the Congress in the talks over seat sharing arrangement whereas the Congress has demanded a disproportionately large number of twenty six seats, most of which they can not even win. Sources privy to the goings-on in the series of meetings said that Congress is burdened by a large number of aspirants for nomination including the octogenarian Samir Ranjan Barman who wants to contest the polls. Besides, Gopal insists on allocation of Banamalipur seat to himself as part of Congress share in spite of the fact that he had forfeited his security deposit in the seat in 2018 against BJP’s former chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb.

But the most acute problem is that of PCC president Birajit Sinha who had won the Kailasahar seat in 1988, and then from 1998 to 2013. But in the assembly election in 2018 he had been routed by the CPI (M)’s candidate Mobassar Ali and had barely managed to save his security deposit. This time the CPI (M) is not keen to give up this , having a sitting MLA and unless the matter is sorted out Birajit may have to go to Chandipur seat where his prospects do not look bright. All these issues will come up for discussion in his meeting with the party’s top leadership who may consult CPI (M) politburo member Sitaram Yechudi for hammering out a solution to the tangle. But the time is running out as the CPI (M) is likely to announce its list of nominations this evening.

Besides, the chief minister Dr Manik Saha, deputy chief minister Jishnu Debbarma and the BJP state president Rajiv Bhattacharjee are leaving for Delhi in the evening with a tentative list of nominations which will be discussed and approved in BJP’s meeting of the parliamentary board, apex organizational body. Sources in BJP said that the party’s national leadership got an organizational election conducted in every ‘Mandal’ to select preferred candidates and the list of candidates will be tallied and reconciled with what the chief minister and deputy chief minister will propose . After the reconciliation process is over the BJP central leadership will announce the list of nominations from Delhi , presumably after pruning the current list of sitting MLAs. Many sitting BJP MLAs are keeping their fingers crossed and options open over the announcement of the fresh list of nominations by the central leadership as the BJP is always known to drop unpopular sitting MLAs to avert anti-incumbency . What will happen in Tripura is still not known but a deep suspense has gripped the BJP legislature party, sources said.
