Altogether four persons die unnatural deaths every twenty four hours which means one person dies unnaturally every six hours. This information was furnished in the state assembly by the home department of the state government in written reply to an ‘unstarred’ question-not meant for direct reply within the house-raised by Congress MLA Sudip Roybarman and CPI (M) MLA Mobassar Ali.

According to the reply between February 1 2020 and August 31 2022-that is, in almost 912 days- 3855 people including women have died unnatural deaths. The hard statistical data shows that in every twenty four hours 1 woman and 3 men die unnatural deaths. According to Section 174 of CrPc unnatural death is defined as deaths caused by suicide, murder, animal attacks and mechanical failure like vehicular accidents. Such deaths have been defined as unnatural or abnormal.

Responding to the information tabled in the assembly MLAs Sudip Roybarman and Mobassar Ali said that growing frustration among people over life and livelihood problems were leading them to unnatural deaths like suicides . Holding the ‘misrule’ of the state government responsible for the spurt in unnatural deaths the MLAs said that in many cases the police was showing political murders and other suspicious deaths as ‘suicides’. They demanded a high level inquiry into the unnatural deaths.
