Democrats secure control of both houses of Congress in US midterm elections

New Delhi, Nov 04, 2026 : In the US midterm elections, the Democratic Party secured 54 seats out of 100 seats in the Senate, gaining control of the upper chamber of Congress following a series of electoral victories.

In the House of Representatives, the Democratic Party have also crossed the threshold of 218 seats required to win the majority as it won 224 seats, while the Republican Party secured 135 of the 435 seats. The counting of ballots is underway.

The Democratic Party registered significant gains in several traditionally Republican states. In South Carolina, Democratic candidate and doctor Annie Andrews defeated Republican Darline Graham to win a Senate seat.

The state had not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1998. In neighbouring North Carolina, former Governor and Democratic candidate Roy Cooper defeated Republican Michael Whatley, securing another Senate seat for his party.

In Texas, Democratic candidate and seminarian James Talarico defeated State Attorney General Ken Paxton. This marks a significant development in a state where Democrats have not won a statewide election since 1994. Meanwhile, in Ohio, Democrat Sherrod Brown defeated incumbent Republican Senator Jon Husted.

In Kansas, Democratic pastor Adam Hamilton also defeated sitting Republican Senator Roger Marshall. Reacting to the election results, US President Donald Trump said that he will accept the results. Polling was held for all 435 seats in the US House of Representatives, 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate, and 36 governorships.

The Democratic victory is expected to have a significant impact on the remaining term of President Donald Trump, particularly on the functioning of the US Congress and the legislative agenda of his administration.
