Mahalaya being observed across Bangladesh

New Delhi, Oct 10, 2026 : Mahalaya, marking the advent of Goddess Durga, is being observed today with religious rituals and devotional programmes by Hindu communities across Bangladesh. The occasion signifies the end of Pitru Paksha, dedicated to ancestors, and the beginning of Devi Paksha, the auspicious fortnight preceding Durga Puja.

Dhakeshwari National Temple in Dhaka is organising a special programme, including prayers and til-tarpan offerings for the departed souls of ancestors. Ramna Kali Mandir is also holding Mahalaya celebrations. Indian High Commissioner in Bangladesh Sh. Dinesh Trivedi attended the ceremony.

Devotees mark the occasion by offering prayers and listening to the recitation of the Sree Sree Chandi. The traditional Mahishasura Mardini programme. Mahalaya signals the beginning of the countdown to Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of Bangladesh’s Hindu community. The five-day festival will formally begin with Maha Shashthi on October 16 and conclude with the immersion of idols on Bijoya Dashami on October 21.
