Mizoram sees sharp rise in tourist arrivals
New Delhi, Oct 05, 2026 : Amid efforts by the state government to promote tourism through festivals, cultural events and adventure-based attractions, Mizoram has recorded six lakh 75 thousand 284 tourist arrivals between January and August this year, officials said. As per official figures, 6,64,197 domestic tourists and 11,087 tourists from different countries visited the state during the period.
The northeastern state also recorded a tourist footfall of 5,24,784, including 5,911 foreign visitors during the 2024-25 financial year, and the tourist arrivals had significantly increased to 9,80,618 in 2025-26, the official data said. Officials attributed the surge to improved infrastructure, including new rail connectivity and aggressive promotional campaigns highlighting the state’s eco-tourism potential.
The 51.38 km Bairabi-Sairang railway line opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13 September last year has brought Mizoram within the fold of the country’s railway map. The rail link has not only integrated Aizawl into the national grid but also triggered a sharp increase in tourist arrivals, officials said.
They said that the state government has also implemented the Mizoram Responsible Tourism Policy, 2020, the Mizoram (Registration of Tourist Trade) Act, 2020 and the Mizoram (Registration of Tourist Trade) Rules, 2020 to ensure the safety of tourists and improve service standards. The government is taking measures collectively with churches and civil society organisations to promote tourism and attract more tourists, they said.
