Punjab to be made drug-free by the end of 2029: Amit Shah

New Delhi, Sep 30, 2026 : Senior BJP leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that Punjab will be made drug-free by the end of 2029. Addressing a ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Rally’ in Jalandhar today, Mr. Shah said the BJP would contest the upcoming Assembly elections in Punjab on the issue of making the state free from the menace of drugs. He said the BJP fulfils the promises it makes. Mr. Shah said the government has addressed terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and ended extremism in the North-East, adding that the focus will now be on making Punjab drug-free.

Paying tribute to martyrs from Punjab, including Shaheed Bhagat Singh and Udham Singh, who played a significant role in country’s freedom struggle, Mr. Shah said the state, once known for its bravery, agriculture and prosperity, is now facing the challenge of the drug menace. He blamed Aam Aadmi Party government in the state for the deteriorating law and order situation, corruption and rising drug-related problems in Punjab.

Mr. Shah said he met families affected by drug abuse who had lost their loved ones. He assured them that if the BJP comes to power in the state, those involved in selling drugs would be dealt with firmly. The Home Minister also assured farmers that their concerns will be addressed. He said efforts will also be made to revive industries and create employment opportunities for the youth in Punjab.
