India is building capabilities, keeping in mind the nature of warfare over the next 10, 20 and 25 years: Defence Minister
New Delhi, Sep 27, 2026 : Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today said that India is building capabilities keeping in mind the nature of warfare over the next 10, 20 and 25 years, as it moves towards creating a self-reliant and future-orientated defence ecosystem.
He made these remarks while speaking at an event organised by a media house in New Delhi. Mr Singh emphasised that the country should not merely focus on importing technology but should strive to define and develop defence technologies.
The Minister said that in the future, the security domain and the battlefield will be technology-driven, and countries that lead in technology will have an advantage on the battlefield.
He said this is why India is focusing on making its defence strategy future-ready, with the emphasis not only on developing weapons for today but also on preparing for future challenges.
Mr Singh stressed that modern warfare is no longer limited to armed forces or weapons but has become multi-sectoral.
Highlighting the growth of the defence sector, he said that over the past 12 years, the country’s defence capabilities have increased significantly, along with a major change in its approach towards strengthening national security.
The Minister said that the government has also substantially increased capital allocation in the defence budget. He highlighted that nearly 75 percent of the capital acquisition budget of one lakh 39 thousand crore rupees has been earmarked for procurement from the domestic defence industry.
Mr Singh said that to promote self-reliance in defence, the armed forces have issued five Positive Indigenisation Lists, covering a total of 509 defence equipment, weapon systems and platforms.
Mr Singh iterated that India believes in peace and does not want war. He said India neither wants to occupy the territory of any country nor intimidate any country. He emphasised that there is a difference between peace and weakness. He said India wants peace but will not compromise on its security.
