Meghalaya CM speaks to Assam CM over violence

New Delhi, Aug 21, 2026 : Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today stated that he has spoken to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding the violence caused to Assam-registered vehicles as well as tourists during the black-flag bike rally carried out in Shillong yesterday.

Sangma, on a social media post said that both governments have agreed to work together to normalise the situation. Designated Cabinet Ministers from both States will meet to take the discussions forward and explore ways to restore peace, trust and normalcy.

The statement comes amid blocking of vehicles bearing Meghalaya registration in Jorabat area along the Assam-Meghalaya border. The vehicles were prevented from entering Assam following the attack on Assam-registered vehicles during the rally held by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU).

A black flag bike rally organised by the KSU against the Meghalaya state government yesterday in Shillong turned violent. Police said the rally resulted in damage to 31 vehicles. Protesters allegedly pelted stones at vehicles, damaged cars from Assam, set fire to two government vehicles and assaulted pedestrians at different locations in the city.

Meghalaya Chief Minister has appealed to citizens of both States to maintain peace, harmony and restraint. “Meghalaya and Assam share deep bonds, and we must work together to protect them,” he said.
