35th Manipuri language day celebrated across the state
New Delhi, Aug 21, 2026 : The 35th Manipuri Language Day was celebrated today across the State, commemorating the inclusion of Manipuri language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India on 20th August, 1992. The State-level event was held today at the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA) in Imphal under the theme “State Song ‘Sana Leibak Manipur’ for Peace, Unity and Integrity”. It was organised by the Manipuri Language Day State Level Celebration Committee in collaboration with the JNMDA, a constituent unit of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi.
Speaking on the occasion, State Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam said that language is our identity and pride, adding that language is not merely a means of communication but an important expression of the identity, culture, history and civilisation of a people. He urged all stakeholders to work together towards protecting and promoting the linguistic heritage of Manipur. The Minister stated that the Government will make efforts to get Manipuri language as Classical Language before the occasion of next years’ Manipuri Language Day.
The programme was attended by MLA S. Rajen Singh and Karam Shyam, eminent filmmaker and composer of the State Song- Aribam Shyam Sharma, former Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Education- Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh and other dignitaries. The programme featured a patriotic song presented by AMMIK, short speech by the Director of JNMDA and Programme Executive of Akashvani Imphal- Heikrujam Devendro Singh.
