ASSAM TO SET UP HIGHER EDUCATION COUNCIL FOR BETTER GOVERNANCE

New Delhi, Aug 14, 2026 : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the state was moving towards a more organised, transparent and structured higher education system with the proposed Assam State Higher Education Council.

Sarma said the council would play a key role in steering the state’s higher education ecosystem by strengthening institutional systems, planning and coordination.

“We have built the infrastructure; we are now building the systems which drive it,” the chief minister said in a social media post outlining the significance of the proposed council.

According to Sarma, the council would provide a structured framework for the development and management of higher education in Assam, with the objective of improving institutional governance and academic outcomes while creating a student-focused ecosystem.

The proposed framework will focus on four broad areas — national funding, better planning, academic excellence and stronger institutional governance.

The state government has been expanding and strengthening educational infrastructure across Assam, including higher education institutions. The proposed council is expected to complement these efforts by improving coordination, planning and administrative systems.

Sarma said the new institutional framework would help make the higher education ecosystem more organised and transparent and create better opportunities for students across the state.

The council is also expected to facilitate systematic planning and coordination among institutions, with the broader aim of improving the quality and efficiency of higher education administration.

The Assam government has in recent years emphasised education and skill development as key components of its development agenda. The proposed council marks a greater focus on strengthening institutional mechanisms alongside physical infrastructure.
