First time Railways successfully transported live donor heart

New Delhi, Jul 31, 2026 : Indian Railways has successfully transported a live donor heart by train for the first time in India. The life-saving organ was transported from Surat to Ahmedabad aboard Mumbai-Gandhinagar Vande Bharat Express, ensuring its safe and timely arrival for transplantation at Ahmedabad’s U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre. A dedicated Green Corridor was created from Ahmedabad Railway Station to the U.N. Mehta Institute by the Railway Protection Force and Gujarat State Police, to ensure that the transplant procedure could commence without delay. The Ministry of Railways said, this exemplary coordination between Indian Railways, RPF, Gujarat Police and medical teams demonstrates the expanding role of Railways in life-saving healthcare services.
