Flood death toll in Assam rises to 47; over 7.21 lakh people affected

New Delhi, Jul 24, 2026 : The death toll due to floods in Assam has risen to 47, with six more deaths reported yesterday. More than 7.21 lakh people are affected by the floods in 11 districts across the state. As many as 24,124 people have taken shelter in 103 relief camps, while 255 relief distribution centres have been set up.

The flood situation remains critical in the Upper Assam districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat, which together account for nearly 94% of the affected population.

Sivasagar is the worst-affected district, with more than 3.75 lakh people impacted and around 300 villages inundated. Four deaths were reported from the district yesterday. More than 1.86 lakh people are affected in Charaideo, while over 1.15 lakh people have been affected in Jorhat.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma yesterday reviewed the flood situation and the ongoing relief and rehabilitation measures at a high-level meeting in Dispur.

The meeting assessed the situation in the worst-affected districts and reviewed the damage to embankments, roads and bridges, as well as the progress of relief operations. The Chief Minister directed officials to ensure an uninterrupted supply of relief materials, essential food items and safe drinking water to the affected people.
