Centre releases over Rs.527 crore for West Bengal under NHM
New Delhi, May 23, 2026 : The Central Government has released more than five hundred twenty-seven crore rupees under the National Health Mission as the first tranche for West Bengal for financial year 2026-27. Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda today reviewed the healthcare systems in West Bengal during a virtual meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
During the meeting, Mr Nadda assured full support and cooperation to West Bengal for strengthening healthcare infrastructure, improving disease surveillance, and expanding preventive healthcare. Health Ministry said in a statement that the discussions focused on strengthening healthcare services, implementation of key health programmes, and effective utilization of funds under the National Health Mission, PM-ABHIM and other flagship schemes. Mr Nadda also focused on the need for launching HPV vaccination initiatives and accelerating the implementation of TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan in the State.
Significant discussions were also held regarding the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding for the implementation of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana at the earliest, so that eligible beneficiaries may receive its benefits without any delay. The Health Minister said that sustained efforts are also required to improve and maintain key public health indicators such as Maternal Mortality Rate, Under-5 Mortality Rate and Neonatal Mortality Rate in the state.
During the meeting, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari emphasized on strengthening healthcare administrative mechanisms and grassroots-level implementation systems to ensure efficient delivery of health services across the State. Mr Adhikari also proposed implementation and expansion of the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana in West Bengal to ensure wider availability of quality generic medicines at affordable prices for the common people.
