Opposition parties dismiss Mamata Banerjee’s appeal for United Front against BJP

New Delhi, May 11, 2026 : In West Bengal, Congress and Left parties have strongly rejected Mamata Banerjee’s call for a united opposition front against the BJP.

Ms Banerjee, in a video message, urged all opposition forces—including Congress, CPI(M), and ultra-Left groups—to join hands against what she described as the “first enemy.”

Congress spokesperson Soumya Aich Roy dismissed the appeal, questioning her reference to ultra-Left groups and recalling Maoist violence against Congress workers in 2013. He accused the Trinamool Congress of vilifying Congress in past elections and enabling the BJP’s rise, saying it was Mamata who gave the BJP its foothold in Bengal.

CPI(M) state secretary Md Salim also rejected the proposal outright, branding Banerjee as corrupt and communal. CPI state secretary Swapan Bandopadhyay added that there can be no question of joining hands with Mamata, whom he described as autocratic and undemocratic.

CPI (M-L) Liberation’s Abhijit Majumdar went further, labelling the Trinamool Congress a right-wing authoritarian party, while SUCI (Communist) Polit Bureau member Amitabh Chatterjee remarked that Mamata is making such appeals only because she has been defeated.

Meanwhile, newly sworn-in Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP dismissed Banerjee’s call as irrelevant, saying she no longer holds political significance.

These strong reactions highlight the deep mistrust between the Left and the Trinamool Congress, signalling that any united front against the BJP remains unlikely in Bengal’s political landscape.
