Rabindra jayanti celebrated

New Delhi, May 09, 2026 : Rabindra Jayanti is being celebrated today on Pochishe Boishakh, marking the 165th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Thakur.

Cultural functions are held globally, with major celebrations at Santiniketan, Visva-Bharati University, and throughout West Bengal and Bangladesh, featuring Rabindra Sangeet, poetry, dance, and drama.

Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have offered tributes to Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore on the occasion of Pochishe Boishakh.

In a social media post, the Vice-President said that Gurudev’s contributions extended far beyond the realm of literature. He described Tagore as a pioneering thinker, artist and educationist, whose works reflected the richness of Indian civilisation and the universal values of humanity.

The Prime Minister said that Rabindranath Thakur was a writer, thinker and poet of extraordinary brilliance. Mr Modi said he made a mark as an exceptional philosopher, educationist, artist and a timeless voice of India’s civilisational soul.

The Prime Minister said that Gurudev Tagore gave expression to the deepest emotions of humanity and the noblest ideals of the culture. Mr Modi said that Tagore enriched the society with new thought, creative energy and cultural confidence.

He said that Tagore is remembered with deep reverence and gratitude. Mr Modi also hoped that Tagore’s thoughts continue to illuminate minds and guide citizens in their endeavours.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in his message said, Gurudev Rabindranath Thakur immensely strengthened the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.

Describing Rabindranath Thakur as a towering literary figure, profound thinker, and musical genius, the Defence Minister said that the life, philosophy and values of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore will continue to inspire generations to come.

Union Home Minister Mr Shah said that Gurudev infused new momentum into the spirit of freedom through literature, music, and philosophy.

He said that Rabindranath Thakur’s timeless creation Gitanjali has given new direction to humanity, spirituality, and sensitivity, and the Jana Gana Mana gave voice to national unity, dignity, and self-respect.
