Mamata Banerjee Refuses to Resign After 2026 Bengal Poll Outcome, Alleges Conspiracy

North East, May 05, 2026 : In a dramatic political development following the West Bengal Assembly Election 2026 results, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has firmly refused to step down from her post, despite indications that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured the mandate to form the next government.

Addressing a press conference from Kalighat in Kolkata on Tuesday, Banerjee asserted that she has not accepted defeat and will neither visit the Raj Bhavan nor submit her resignation. “We have not lost. There has been a conspiracy. Therefore, there is no question of resignation,” she stated emphatically.

The statement came amid widespread expectations that Banerjee would follow precedent by resigning after the electoral verdict became clear. In 2011, former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had promptly resigned after his party’s defeat, paving the way for Banerjee’s rise to power.

However, Banerjee dismissed any such comparison, reiterating that the current situation is fundamentally different. She alleged large-scale irregularities during vote counting and accused both the BJP and sections of the election administration of orchestrating malpractice. According to her, party workers were attacked, women were not spared, and crucial documents such as Form 17C were forcibly taken away.

She further claimed personal harassment, stating that she was manhandled and physically assaulted during the process. “I was pushed, beaten, and humiliated. As a woman and as a human being, what I faced reflects what our workers have gone through,” she said.

Under constitutional norms, the Governor, currently RN Ravi can ask the Chief Minister to resign if she no longer commands a majority. However, Banerjee made it clear that even if directed, she would refuse to step down.
