WB: Suvendu Adhikari defeats Mamta Banerjee

New Delhi, May 05, 2026 : In West Bengal, BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari defeated Chief Minister and TMC leader Mamata Banerjee in the Bhabanipur assembly constituency by more than 15 thousand votes.

Out of a total of 293 assembly seats, BJP has bagged 177 seats and is leading in 31 seats, while Trinamool Congress has won 61 seats and is leading in 18 seats. , Congress and regional Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) secured two seats each, CPM clinched one seat.

The BJP is poised to script history in West Bengal by forming a government with an overwhelming mandate in the state assembly polls. The state will be witnessing its first BJP government since Independence as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is staring at defeat after 15 years in power.

Other Prominent BJP candidates who registered win include, Agnimitra Paul from Asansol Dakshin constituency and Karfa Soumen from the Bhatar seat. Party candidate and one of the Sandeshkhali victims, Rekha Patra won from Hingalganj constituency. BJP candidate Subrata Maitra defeated Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in Baharampur seat.

On the other hand, TMC’s Reyar Hossain Sarkar has emerged victorious from the Bhagawangola seat.

Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chief Humayun Kabir has won both Nowda and Rejinagar seats.

Voting for 294 seats in West Bengal was held in two phases on 23rd and 29th of last month. To form the government, a simple majority of 148 seats is needed. Any party or coalition of parties must gain the magic figure to win the election.

West Bengal registered record voter turnout of 92.47 per cent in two-phase polling– the highest since Independence.

While repolling was held in 11 booths of Magrahat Paschim and four in Diamond Harbour assembly segment on 2nd of May, the Election Commission countermanded polls in the adjacent Falta constituency, citing severe electoral offences and subversion of democratic process during polling in a large number of booths. The fresh poll in that seat will take place on 21st of this month and counting on 24th of May.

More than 2.5 lakh personnel of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), along with state police, have been deployed in the run-up to the counting.

In the 2021 elections, the TMC had won 215 seats, while the BJP bagged 77, and the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha and ISF one seat each.
