PM HIGHLIGHTS ‘ABHILEKH PATAL’ DIGITAL ARCHIVE, SHOWCASES RARE MANUSCRIPTS AND HISTORIC RECORDS

New Delhi, Apr 26, 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday drew attention to a vast digital archive created by the National Archives of India, urging citizens to explore the ‘Abhilekh Patal’ portal for a deeper understanding of India’s historical legacy.

Speaking during the latest episode of Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister said the portal hosts over 200 million digitised documents, including rare manuscripts, letters, and records related to key figures and events in Indian history.

Among the highlights, PM Modi mentioned the 7th-century Gilgit Manuscripts written on Bhoj Patra (birch bark), and the 8th-century text Siribhoovalay, known for its unique numerical grid format.

He also referred to historically valuable letters linked to Rani Lakshmibai, noting that these documents shed light on her decisions during the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and reflect her courage.

The Prime Minister added that the portal includes extensive material related to Subhas Chandra Bose, including documents on the Azad Hind Fauj and his speeches. Records associated with Madan Mohan Malaviya are also available, covering the founding of Banaras Hindu University and the Hindi Sahitya Sammelan.

In addition, users can access archival material related to the Constituent Assembly of India, offering insights into the framing of the Constitution.

Explaining the name, PM Modi said “Abhilekh” refers to records in Sanskrit, while “Patal” denotes a platform, together forming the acronym for Portal for Access to Archives and Learning.

During the broadcast, the Prime Minister also paid tribute to Rabindranath Tagore ahead of his birth anniversary, celebrated as Pochchishe Boishakh on May 9.

Recalling his visits to Shantiniketan, PM Modi described Tagore as a multifaceted personality who contributed to literature, education, and rural development. He also noted the enduring global influence of Rabindra Sangeet.

The Prime Minister further remembered the upcoming anniversary of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, paying homage to those who ignited the spirit of patriotism during the uprising.
