EC seeks Kolkata police report over non-use of central forces in BJP-TMC clash

New Delhi, Mar 15, 2026 : The Election Commission has sought report from the Police Commissioner of Kolkata regarding non utilisation of central force during the clash that broke out between BJP and Trinamool Congress workers at Girish Park yesterday, while BJP supporters were on their way to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally at the Brigade Parade Ground. Eight police personnel and several supporters from both sides were injured. BJP’s North Kolkata district president, Tamoghn Ghosh, was hospitalized after being struck by a brick. There were allegations of vandalism and assault by the State Minister Shashi Panja but she did not file a complaint. Kolkata Police registered a suo motu case. State Police said, four people have been arrested so far, including three BJP workers from Baranagar.

Last night, BJP workers staged a protest outside Barahnagar police station, led by BJP leader Sajal Ghosh, condemning the arrests. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar alleged that close associates of a state minister Sashi Panja were behind the attack, calling it an attempt to disrupt the rally after seeing the massive turnout.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari accused police of blocking BJP workers across the state from attending the rally, claiming at least 12 were injured. On the other hand, Minister Shashi Panja told reporters that an unprecedented attack was carried out on her, stressing that even women were not spared.
