GAMBHIR CREDITS DRAVID, LAXMAN, AGARKAR FOR SHAPING T20 WORLD CUP-WINNING TEAM

New Delhi, Mar 09, 2026 : India head coach Gautam Gambhir credited former head coach Rahul Dravid, National Cricket Academy (now BCCI Centre of Excellence) head VVS Laxman and chief selector Ajit Agarkar for India’s triumph in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, saying their contributions played a crucial role in shaping the title-winning team.

Speaking after India’s victory, Gambhir said the trophy should first be dedicated to Dravid, whom he succeeded as head coach.

“First of all, I think I should dedicate this trophy to Rahul Bhai and then to Laxman Bhai. What Rahul Bhai has done to keep Indian cricket in such good shape — I have to thank him for everything he did during his tenure,” Gambhir said at the post-match press conference.

Gambhir praised Laxman’s work behind the scenes at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, highlighting its role in preparing and rehabilitating players.

“VVS Laxman has done so much for Indian cricket behind the scenes. The Centre of Excellence remains the pipeline for Indian cricket,” he said.

The Indian head coach also acknowledged chief selector Ajit Agarkar for his support and honesty in building the squad, adding that the selection committee had backed the team through challenging phases.

“Ajit Agarkar takes a lot of flak, but the honesty with which he has worked has been incredible,” he said.

Further, the former opener thanked former BCCI secretary and current ICC chairman Jay Shah for supporting him during difficult moments.

“Not many people call you when you go through the lowest moments. Jay Bhai trusted me with this job,” Gambhir said.

Reflecting on his appointment as head coach despite limited coaching experience, Gambhir said the faith shown in him strengthened his belief in the system.

“When I was given this job, I had no experience of being the head coach of any franchise or team. The fact that they trusted me for this role means a lot. Indian cricket is in very safe hands,” he added.
