PM and HM condole demise of former Railway Minister Mukul Roy

New Delhi, Feb 23, 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended condolences over the demise of former Railway Minister and Rajya Sabha MP Mukul Roy. In a social media post, the Prime Minister said that Mukul Roy will be remembered for his political experience and efforts to serve society. Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed grief over the passing of former Union Minister Mukul Roy today. In a social media post, Mr Shah said that Mukul Roy’s long career in public service was defined by his understanding of organisational dynamics and public issues. Mr Shah also extended condolences to his family members and supporters.

Mukul Roy passed away early this morning at a private hospital in Kolkata. He was 71. His son, Subhranshu Roy, informed that Roy died around 1:30 AM after a prolonged battle with multiple health problems. Roy, a founding member of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) and once considered the party’s number two leader, began his political journey in the Indian National Congress before helping to establish the TMC in 1998. Later, due to a dispute with the TMC supremo, he shifted to the BJP and in 2021 Assembly election, which he won from the Krishnanagar North constituency on a BJP ticket. However, after the elections, he returned to his old party, Trinamool.
