TRIPURA STRESSES ON RAINWATER CONSERVATION FOR SUSTAINABLE WATER SECURITY: MINISTER
New Delhi, Dec 19, 2025 : With groundwater levels in Tripura remaining stable, the BJP-led state government has initiated a series of measures to strengthen rainwater conservation and ensure a sustainable water supply in the coming years, State Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath said on Thursday.
Nath chaired an executive committee meeting on the Watershed Development Project under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana at Pragna Bhavan here.
He highlighted the importance of preparing states that rely on rainwater for future water needs, stating that this was the key reason for launching the scheme.
“To store rainwater after it infiltrates the soil, we have initiated measures such as constructing watersheds, check dams, ponds, plantations, and more. Significant investments have been made, and we have achieved considerable success. Phase 3.0 of the project will commence after March,” the Minister said.
He pointed out that states like Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan primarily depend on groundwater for personal and agricultural use. “These states are now facing water shortages due to declining groundwater levels,” he added.
The Minister said, “Tripura is in a safe position, with only 9.7 per cent of groundwater being used, compared to 15 per cent in Assam and 52 per cent in West Bengal. However, we must think about future generations, which is why the Watershed Development Project under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana was launched.”
He also stated that the executive meeting focused on strategies to store more rainwater and promote self-reliance among citizens. Officials were requested to utilize the remaining funds by January 15, 2026, to secure additional resources for the next phase of the project.
Chief Minister Manik Saha attended the meeting along with Zilla Sabhadhipatis from all eight Zilla Parishads.
Nath added that the state government is considering developing water bodies along national highways, integrated with road connectivity, children’s parks, open gyms, and plantations.
