VIJAY DIWAS: INDIAN ARMY RECALLS COURAGE OF ARMED FORCES IN 1971 WAR

New Delhi, Dec 16, 2025 : Vijay Diwas is being observed across India on Monday to mark the country’s definitive victory in the 1971 war, which led to the liberation of Bangladesh and significantly reshaped South Asia’s geopolitical landscape. The Indian Army and the country’s leadership paid tributes to the courage, discipline and sacrifice of the Armed Forces that played a defining role in Pakistan’s humiliating loss in the 1971 war.

Recalling the events of 1971, the Indian Army said Vijay Diwas symbolises the historic victory achieved through coordinated military action and strong resolve.

In a post on X, the Army highlighted that Indian forces fought alongside the Mukti Bahini, providing decisive support to Bangladesh’s liberation movement. The campaign, it noted, brought an end to large-scale atrocities and oppression and culminated in the surrender of around 93,000 Pakistani soldiers within 13 days. It is considered one of the largest military surrenders in history.

The Army said the victory reaffirmed India’s commitment to justice, its support for friendly nations and its military preparedness.

India and Bangladesh also continued the tradition of joint participation in Victory Day commemorations. War veterans and serving officers from both countries took part in events held in India and Bangladesh, reflecting the shared history and sacrifices of the 1971 Liberation War.

According to the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh, eight Bangladeshi war veterans and two serving officers arrived in India to participate in Vijay Diwas events in Kolkata, while a similar Indian delegation visited Dhaka for Bangladesh’s Victory Day celebrations.

President Droupadi Murmu paid tributes to the Armed Forces, recalling their valour, devotion and patriotism. She highlighted the Army’s emphasis on self-reliance and indigenisation, noting that recent operations reflect strategic resolve and preparedness for future challenges.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended greetings on Vijay Diwas, remembering the soldiers whose courage and sacrifice ensured India’s historic victory in 1971. He said their selfless service continues to inspire generations.
