FIDE Grand Swiss: World chess champion D Gukesh held to draw by 14-year-old Turkish prodigy
New Delhi, Sep 06, 2025 : World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju was held to a draw by 14-year-old Turkish prodigy Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus in the second-round encounter at the FIDE Grand Swiss Chess 2025.
Gukesh, who had won his first-round game, appeared to have the upper hand through much of the middle game.
However, the young Erdogmus showed remarkable composure and defensive skill to hold the position and secure a well-earned draw.
The result is a major highlight for the Turkish teenager, who is quickly emerging as one of the top young talents in international chess.
Meanwhile, in the women’s section, defending champion Vaishali Rameshbabu continued her strong start. She defeated Eline Roebers of the Netherlands to move into an early lead in the tournament standings.
Vaishali’s brother, top seed R Praggnanandhaa, also scored a win in Round 2, beating Ivan Zemlyanskii in a confident performance.
The Grand Swiss tournament continues with Round 3 today, as the world’s top players battle for crucial qualification spots.
