In yet another incident raising serious concerns over the deteriorating political atmosphere in Tripura ahead of the forthcoming Urban Local Body (ULB) elections, unidentified miscreants allegedly set fire to the CPIM Bamutia Regional Committee office at Kalibazar under Bamutia Assembly constituency during the early hours of Diwali eve.

According to local sources, the incident occurred at approximately 2 AM, when unidentified miscreants allegedly set the party office on fire. Fortunately, local residents noticed the flames and immediately rushed to the spot. Their prompt intervention helped bring the fire under control and prevented it from spreading to nearby establishments and houses. A potentially major fire disaster was thus averted in the Kalibazar area.

Following the incident, CPIM leaders approached the police and demanded an immediate investigation, identification of those responsible and strict legal action against the perpetrators.

Local MLA Nayan Sarkar visited the site of the incident and inspected the damaged party office. He also reportedly visited the police station and raised the issue with the police authorities.

While strongly condemning the incident, Sarkar accused BJP-backed miscreants of being involved in the alleged arson. He alleged that the incident was part of a continuing pattern of political attacks against opposition parties in the state.

Referring to the alleged attack on former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and previous incidents targeting opposition party offices, the CPIM MLA claimed that BJP-backed elements were responsible for creating an atmosphere of political intimidation.

He demanded that the police identify everyone involved in the incident and bring them under the ambit of law, irrespective of their political affiliations.

Sarkar further stated that police officials had assured him that the incident would be investigated and those responsible would be identified and dealt with according to law.

The incident has once again brought the question of political violence and law and order into focus at a time when Tripura is preparing for Urban Local Body elections across 21 urban local bodies.

Incidents involving alleged attacks on political workers, damage to party offices, intimidation and confrontations between rival political groups are increasingly becoming a matter of concern in the state's political environment.

The latest incident at Bamutia is particularly significant because it occurred during Diwali, a festival traditionally associated with peace, harmony and the victory of good over evil.
