Angry residents of Bogabil along the Kamalpur to Khowai–Agartala National Highway staged a road blockade on Sunday morning, bringing vehicular movement to a standstill and causing considerable inconvenience to commuters during the Kali Puja festivities. The protesters alleged that prolonged neglect, poor-quality construction and the failure to complete essential road surfacing work have made their daily lives increasingly unbearable.

According to the agitating residents, the continuous movement of hundreds of vehicles along the unfinished and dusty stretch has created an extremely difficult living environment for people residing beside the highway. They alleged that thick clouds of dust rise throughout the day as vehicles pass through the area, making it almost impossible for residents to carry on their normal activities.

The situation has reportedly become particularly alarming for families with young children and elderly members. Residents claimed that people in almost every household are suffering from health-related problems due to prolonged exposure to dust and pollution. They expressed concern that children and senior citizens are especially vulnerable to respiratory illnesses and other health complications.

The roadside business community has also been severely affected. Owners of shops, hotels and other commercial establishments alleged that the continuous accumulation of dust has discouraged customers from visiting their establishments. According to them, maintaining cleanliness has become nearly impossible, and several businesses are now facing the prospect of closure because of declining customer footfall and financial losses.

The protesters have demanded that the authorities immediately undertake the necessary road surfacing work and complete the bituminous carpeting of the affected stretch without further delay. They maintained that temporary measures or repeated assurances would no longer be acceptable and that a permanent solution was essential to restore normal living conditions.

Residents further alleged that their suffering has continued for nearly five years because of repeated delays and allegedly substandard road construction work. They claimed that the quality of the work undertaken over the years has failed to provide a durable road surface, forcing local people to endure recurring dust pollution, inconvenience and economic hardship.

The blockade has also disrupted traffic at a particularly inconvenient time, as thousands of devotees are travelling to visit the Mata Tripura Sundari Temple at Udaipur during the Kali Puja festival. Several vehicles carrying pilgrims towards the temple were reportedly stranded on the highway, while other commuters were also caught in the traffic disruption.

Despite the blockade continuing since morning, residents alleged that no effective initiative had yet been taken by the administration to resolve the situation and restore normal traffic movement. The absence of an immediate intervention has added to the frustration of commuters and local residents alike.

The agitation has once again brought the condition of the Kamalpur to Khowai–Agartala National Highway under public scrutiny. Residents questioned how people living alongside an important national highway could be left to suffer for years because of incomplete or allegedly poor-quality construction.

The protesters have made it clear that they want immediate action rather than further assurances. They are demanding time-bound completion of bituminous road surfacing and accountability for the prolonged deterioration of the highway.

The incident raises serious questions about the monitoring of national highway construction, the quality of infrastructure work and the accountability of the agencies responsible for maintaining public roads. For the people of Bogabil, the issue is no longer merely about road conditions; it has become a question of public health, livelihood and the fundamental right to live in a clean and safe environment.
