Tripura's railway connectivity has entered a historic new phase with the introduction of electric locomotive-hauled train operations on the route connecting the national capital with Agartala. For the first time, the Tejas Rajdhani Express, travelling from New Delhi towards Agartala, operated with an electric locomotive instead of the conventional diesel engine, marking a significant milestone in the modernisation of the state's railway network.

The historic development was witnessed at Dharmanagar Railway Station, popularly regarded as the gateway to Tripura, where the electric locomotive-hauled Rajdhani Express was seen passing through the station on its journey towards Agartala.

According to railway sources, the development became possible following the completion of railway electrification work on the Agartala–Lumding and Guwahati railway sections. With the electrification of the connecting railway network, electric locomotives can now operate on the route, reducing dependence on conventional diesel-powered operations.

The introduction of electric locomotive services is expected to bring several benefits to railway passengers. Electric traction generally offers better energy efficiency, improved operational performance and reduced local emissions compared with diesel traction. It may also contribute to improved train operations and lower dependence on fossil fuels.

The development is particularly significant for Tripura, which has long faced geographical and infrastructural challenges in establishing faster and more efficient connectivity with the rest of the country. The introduction of electric traction on the Rajdhani route represents another step towards integrating the Northeast with India's expanding modern railway network.

The railway modernisation initiative is also expected to have wider economic implications for Tripura. Improved railway infrastructure and more efficient connectivity could support the movement of passengers and goods, encourage business activities, facilitate tourism and strengthen economic links between the state and other parts of the country.
