With onion prices reportedly touching Rs 70 per kg in several markets across Tripura, a special low-price sale at Rs 30 per kg in Sonamura on Saturday attracted a large number of consumers, bringing considerable relief to people struggling with rising kitchen expenses.

A truckload of onions arrived at the market near Sonamura Bridge on Saturday morning, where onions were being sold at the subsidised rate of Rs 30 per kg. As news of the unusually low price spread, a large number of local residents gathered at the spot to purchase onions. The sudden rush of buyers reflected the growing demand for affordable essential commodities amid the sharp difference between the subsidised selling price and prevailing market rates.

According to the seller, the initiative was being undertaken officially through the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India Limited (NCCF), functioning under the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs. The organisation is selling onions at subsidised prices as part of efforts to provide relief to consumers from rising market prices.

The seller also indicated that similar low-price onion sales would be organised in other markets across the state in the coming days, although the locations and schedules are yet to be announced.

The initiative has drawn attention because of the substantial difference between the government-supported selling price and the prevailing retail prices. While onions were reportedly available at around Rs 70 per kg in several markets, consumers in Sonamura were able to purchase them for less than half that price.

The development comes at a time when Tripura is preparing for municipal council and Nagar Panchayat elections. Rising prices of essential commodities have become a matter of concern for ordinary households, particularly those belonging to economically weaker and middle-income sections. Consumers have expressed dissatisfaction over the high prices of everyday food items and are seeking effective measures to control market rates.

The sudden availability of onions at Rs 30 per kg has therefore generated considerable public interest. Many consumers are now expecting the subsidised sale to be extended to Agartala and other subdivisions so that people across the state can benefit from the initiative.

While the NCCF's intervention is expected to provide temporary relief, consumers will be watching whether such subsidised sales continue regularly and whether they help bring some stability to onion prices in the state's retail markets.
