A total of 879 candidates have submitted nominations for the upcoming Urban Local Body (ULB) elections in Tripura, according to the cumulative nomination report released by the election authorities on November 6. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged with the highest number of candidates, recording 345 nominations, followed by the CPI(M) with 263 candidates and the Indian National Congress with 221 candidates. Tipra Motha Party (TMP) has recorded 15 candidates, while 35 candidates have been placed under the category of Others. No candidate has been recorded under IPFT.
The report covers 21 Urban Local Bodies across the state, comprising 345 wards and 345 seats. A total of 1,109 nomination papers have been received from 879 candidates, indicating that several candidates submitted more than one nomination paper.
On November 6 alone, election authorities received 206 nomination papers from 195 candidates. Of these, 107 candidates belonged to BJP, 73 to Congress, five to CPI(M), two to TMP and eight to Others. No candidate was recorded under IPFT on the day. The daily report also shows that BJP submitted 115 nomination papers, CPI(M) seven, Congress 73, TMP two and Others nine.
The cumulative figures indicate that BJP has submitted 467 nomination papers, CPI(M) 359, Congress 232, TMP 15 and Others 36 (independent), taking the total to 1,109. In terms of candidates, the respective figures are 345, 263, 221, 15 and 35, making the total 879. The election report categorises the last group as Others and does not separately identify how many among them are independent candidates.
The Nagar Panchayat-wise nomination figures have revealed some particularly notable situations in Kamalpur and Jirania. In Kamalpur Nagar Panchayat, which has 11 seats, the cumulative report records 11 BJP candidates and no candidates from CPI(M), Congress, TMP or Others. Similarly, Jirania Nagar Panchayat, also comprising 11 seats, has recorded 11 BJP candidates, with no candidates from other political parties or categories.
These figures indicate that all 11 seats in both Nagar Panchayats have only BJP candidates recorded in the cumulative nomination report. However, the official declaration of uncontested seats will depend on the ward-wise scrutiny of nominations, withdrawal of candidature and publication of the final list of contesting candidates.
In Amarpur Nagar Panchayat, which has 13 seats, a total of 38 candidates have been recorded, including 13 BJP, 14 CPI(M) and 11 Congress candidates. Panisagar Nagar Panchayat has recorded 32 candidates against 13 seats, comprising 13 BJP, 10 CPI(M) and nine Congress candidates.
Sonamura Nagar Panchayat, with 13 seats, has recorded 49 candidates. The cumulative figures include 13 BJP, 17 CPI(M), 13 Congress and six TMP candidates, along with six Others candidates. The report actually records six TMP and no Others. The cumulative candidate distribution is 13 BJP, 17 CPI(M), 13 Congress, six TMP and zero Others, totalling 49.
Bishramganj Nagar Panchayat, which has 11 seats, has recorded 37 candidates, including 10 BJP, 11 CPI(M), nine Congress, six TMP and one Others candidate. Sabroom Nagar Panchayat, with nine seats, has recorded 27 candidates, comprising nine BJP, nine CPI(M), seven Congress, one TMP and one Others candidate.
The Agartala Municipal Corporation, which has 51 wards, has recorded 164 candidates in the cumulative report. BJP and Congress have each recorded 51 candidates, CPI(M) has 44 and Others 18. The total number of nomination papers received in Agartala stands at 192.
Among the other municipal councils, Dharmanagar has recorded 75 candidates, Udaipur 68, Ambassa 47, Belonia 45, Mohanpur 15, Kumarghat 39, Kailashahar 54, Melagarh 37, Bishalgarh 37, Khowai 37, Teliamura 28, Santirbazar 15 and Ranirbazar 13.
The cumulative report also shows that Ranirbazar Municipal Council, comprising 13 seats, has recorded 13 BJP candidates, with no candidates from other parties or categories. Similarly, Mohanpur Municipal Council, which has 15 seats, has recorded 15 BJP candidates and no candidates from other parties in the cumulative figures.
The November 6 nomination report provides an important picture of the political participation and distribution of candidates across Tripura's urban local bodies. While BJP has recorded the highest number of candidates statewide, CPI(M) and Congress have also submitted substantial numbers of nominations across several municipal councils and Nagar Panchayats.
The nomination figures for Kamalpur and Jirania, where the number of BJP candidates matches the total number of seats, have particularly drawn attention. However, the final position regarding uncontested seats will become clear only after the completion of nomination scrutiny, withdrawal and publication of the final list of candidates by the State Election Commission.
