In a significant development for the Tripura Police administration, the Government of India has appointed three officers of the Tripura Police Service (TPS) to the Indian Police Service (IPS) against the Select List of 2025. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India, issued an official notification dated November 6, 2026, from New Delhi, approving their appointment to the Indian Police Service on probation and allocating them to the Tripura Cadre.
According to the notification, issued under the provisions of the Indian Police Service (Recruitment) Rules, 1954, read with the Indian Police Service (Appointment by Promotion) Regulations, 1955, the three officers selected are Kishore Debbarma, born on March 7, 1980; Rajib Nag, born on February 16, 1971; and Rajib Sengupta, born on August 3, 1969. The appointments have been made by the President of India under the relevant provisions governing the promotion of State Police Service officers to the IPS.
As per the notification, all three officers will remain on probation for one year in accordance with the Indian Police Service (Probation) Rules, 1954. They will also be required to undergo induction training as prescribed under the applicable rules. Their elevation to the prestigious All India Police Service marks an important career advancement and fills the three vacancies available under the promotion quota for the Tripura cadre.
The notification also carries a significant legal condition, stating that the appointments will remain subject to the final outcome of Special Leave Petitions (Civil) Nos. 19765–19767 of 2015, titled State of Tripura and Others versus Jayanta Chakraborty and Others, pending before the Supreme Court of India. Thus, although the Central Government has formally approved the appointments, their legal status remains subject to the outcome of the pending proceedings before the apex court.
