Tripura’s healthcare sector has received significant national recognition after the state’s digital healthcare initiatives and implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) and Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) were highly appreciated at a national-level review meeting organised by the Government of India on November 5 and 6.
The two-day national review meeting focused on assessing the progress, achievements and future implementation strategies of the flagship healthcare schemes. Senior officials from various states and Union Territories participated in the deliberations, during which Tripura presented its healthcare delivery model, particularly its achievements in digital transformation and hospital management.
According to information shared by the Health Department, Tripura's model was presented through detailed demonstrations of its overall healthcare infrastructure, digital initiatives and implementation of technology-driven services. The presentation received appreciation from the participating officials and senior representatives of the Union Health Ministry.
Among those who attended the national-level meeting were Kiran Gitte, Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Tripura; G Sarath Nayak, State Mission Director of Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY and ABDM; senior officials from the West Bengal Health and Family Welfare Department, including senior health officials and representatives of the National Health Authority.
During the meeting, Tripura's healthcare achievements and future roadmap were highlighted by the state's Health Secretary and State Mission Director.
One of the major developments highlighted was the state's progress towards making healthcare services completely digital. Tripura has already achieved 100 per cent coverage of ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) ID generation across government hospitals. The state is now moving towards extending the same digital transformation to private healthcare institutions.
The state government has set an ambitious target of bringing private healthcare facilities under the digital healthcare framework within the next two months, ensuring that healthcare records and patient services become increasingly integrated and accessible.
The most significant announcement concerns the introduction of a completely paperless system across government hospitals in Tripura.
From November 10, all government hospitals across the state are scheduled to discontinue the use of manual registers and paper-based documentation for routine hospital services and introduce a fully paperless system. Under this arrangement, patient registration, medical prescriptions, diagnostic investigations, laboratory reports and other hospital-related services will gradually be managed through digital platforms.
For instance, at Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Civil Hospital in Agartala, patients will be able to access the digital healthcare system from the moment they enter the hospital. Registration will begin through the digital platform, followed by consultations, prescriptions, laboratory investigations and other diagnostic services. Prescriptions and reports generated by doctors and diagnostic facilities will also be available digitally.
The initiative is expected to reduce paperwork, improve patient management, minimise delays and enhance transparency in the delivery of healthcare services.
The state government has also directed that manual or paper-based systems should no longer be used in government hospitals from November 10, marking a major transition towards technology-driven healthcare administration.
The initiative is part of the broader objective of implementing an Integrated Health Management Information System (IHMIS) under the Health and Family Welfare Department.
Officials believe that the integration of digital healthcare platforms will strengthen hospital administration, improve coordination between healthcare institutions and facilitate better monitoring of patient services.
