Despite the flurry of nomination filing across the state a chance of CPI (M) and Congress still reaching a last minute electoral understanding for the statewide civic polls still remains positive. An indication in this regard was available from a statement made by the CPI (M) state secretary and politburo member Jiten Chowdhury . “The BJP can not be given a walk-over under any circumstances in the upcoming election ; discussion is still on with Congress and a decision will be taken soon” said Jiten Chowdhury, as reported by the CPI (M) party organ ‘Daily Desher Katha’ on the front page today.
Jiten said that he had discussion with the Congress MLA and senior leader Sudip Roybarman on Tuesday and also had talks with the PCC president Asish Kumar Saha. “We are two separate parties working on different principles; naturally there are issues like demanding more or less seats but a decision will be taken” said Jiten. He said that initially the left front had left 25-26 seats open for Congress which they also wanted but complication has somehow has been created. He added that before the last date for filing nomination on November 10 the CPI (M) will again sit in a meeting with the Congress leadership to arrive at a final solution. Jiten said that even yesterday he had discussion over the issue with PCC president Asish Kumar Saha and a consensus has been reached that BJP can not be given walk-over in the upcoming election. “What we want is consolidation of the total anti-BJP votes to defeat the BJP in the election; that is our main motto” said Jiten.
Meanwhile, in the electoral fight for fifteen wards of Kumarghat municipal corporation the Congress and CPI (M) have reached a clear understanding on seat sharing. According to the understanding reached between the two parties the left front will contest 9 seats on the ratio of CPI (M)-7, Forward Block-1 and CPI-1. The Congress, on the other hand , will put up candidates for 6 remaining Wards. Sources in both Congress and CPI (M) sound confident of winning the election to the Kumarghat municipal council by defeating the BJP .
