Tripura’s healthcare initiatives, model civil hospitals and digital health services have received widespread appreciation at a national review meeting on the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), held in Kolkata, West Bengal.

The two-day meeting, organised by the National Health Authority (NHA), Government of India, on November 5 and 6, brought together senior health officials from various states and Union Territories to review the implementation of the flagship healthcare programmes and discuss future strategies for strengthening healthcare delivery across the country.

During the meeting on November 6, Tripura Health and Family Welfare Secretary Kiran Gitte presented the state’s achievements, operational framework of model civil hospitals and future action plans. G. Sharath Naik, CEO of Ayushman Bharat (Tripura) and State Mission Director of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, also addressed the gathering.

The presentation highlighted Tripura’s progress in integrating digital technologies into public healthcare services, improving hospital management and making healthcare delivery more accessible and efficient. The initiatives received high appreciation from officials and representatives attending the meeting.

Among those present were Sharad Kumar Dwivedi, CEO of the State Health Agency and Secretary of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, West Bengal, and Kiran Gopal Bhaskar, Joint Secretary of the National Health Authority.

The state’s achievements were attributed to the vision and guidance of Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha, who has emphasised the modernisation of healthcare infrastructure and the expansion of digital services.

Addressing the meeting, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte said Tripura was moving towards complete digitisation of healthcare services through the Integrated Health Management Information System (IHMIS), which has already been implemented across the public healthcare sector.

According to the presentation, all government hospitals in Tripura have been onboarded onto the IHMIS, achieving 100% coverage within the public healthcare system. The state has also set a target of bringing private healthcare facilities under the system within the next two months.

The initiative aims to establish a fully digital and paperless healthcare ecosystem, improving patient management, administrative efficiency and the availability of medical information.

Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Agartala Civil Hospital was highlighted as an exemplary model of digital healthcare implementation. The hospital has operated without paper-based processes since its inception, allowing patients to complete the entire treatment process digitally.

From outpatient department (OPD) registration and token generation to admissions, prescriptions, medicine dispensing and laboratory testing, all major patient services are managed electronically.

The state government has further announced that all government hospitals in Tripura will transition to fully paperless operations from November 10, eliminating manual, paper-based processes and expanding the benefits of digital healthcare to patients across the state.

To enable officials from other states to study Tripura’s healthcare model, the CEO of the National Health Authority and the Tripura Health Secretary have formally invited participants at the national meeting to visit the state and witness its digital healthcare transformation firsthand.

The recognition at the national review meeting marks an important milestone for Tripura as it seeks to establish a modern, technology-driven healthcare system with improved service delivery, transparency and patient convenience.
