In a significant organisational change ahead of the upcoming municipal elections in Tripura, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tripura Pradesh has appointed Kanu Lal Majumdar as its new State Treasurer, replacing Nagadhiraj Datta, who had been appointed to the post only recently.

According to an appointment letter issued on November 4, 2026, by BJP Tripura Pradesh President Abhishek Debroy, Majumdar, a resident of Joynagar in Agartala, has been appointed State Treasurer with immediate effect. The appointment letter stated that the new treasurer would be responsible for strengthening the party's organisational activities in the state.

The sudden replacement of Datta, who had recently been entrusted with the party's financial responsibilities, has triggered speculation within political circles, particularly as the civic elections approach. The BJP has not publicly disclosed the reasons behind the change.

Political sources allege that Datta had aspired to become the Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation but was denied the party nomination. However, this claim has not been independently verified, and no official explanation has been issued linking his removal as treasurer to the mayoral nomination process.

The latest appointment comes at a crucial time for the BJP, which is preparing for the upcoming urban local body elections amid reports of discontent over candidate selection in several municipal areas. The change in the state unit's financial leadership is likely to attract further attention as the party seeks to maintain organisational unity and electoral momentum.

The appointment letter was signed by State BJP President Abhishek Debroy and copies were forwarded to the party's national leadership and other senior organisational functionaries for information.
